Nimbl™ Pneumatic Compression Device FAQs

How does Nimbl™ pneumatic compression device work?

Nimbl is a small and compact pneumatic compression device (PCD) used to treat lymphedema and similar conditions that affect the lymphatic system. This device delivers mild, dynamic pressure in 1-3 second intervals, creating a gentle “work and release” action that promotes lymphatic circulation to relieve swelling and other symptoms, such as pain and discomfort. With Nimbl, fluid is directed away from the affected area toward healthier regions of the body.

What can Nimbl™ pneumatic compression device help treat?

Tactile Medical’s Nimbl pneumatic compression device is designed to treat a range of lymphatic disorders, including:

  • Chronic edema: Patients with persistent swelling, whether caused by an injury, illness, poor circulation, or other factors, can use Nimbl to reduce swelling and prevent fluid accumulation.
  • Lymphedema: Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive condition in which lymph fluid builds up in the body’s tissues due to a malformed or damaged lymphatic system, often following surgery or cancer treatment. Pneumatic compression devices are designed to redirect fluid away from areas of malfunctioning lymphatics to healthy regions to assist with absorption and processing.
  • Venous Insufficiency: In some patients, the valves in their veins fail to function properly, causing fluid to pool in the legs. This is known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). This increased venous pressure simultaneously overloads the lymphatic system and can result in swelling, hardening, and other skin changes in the legs and feet. Nimbl can help improve venous return, reducing swelling and related symptoms.
  • Wound healing: Poor lymphatic circulation caused by lymphedema or venous disease can lead to chronic wounds such as venous leg ulcers (VLU), which increase the risk of infection or cellulitis. Nimbl pneumatic compression pumps improve fluid flow, creating a better environment for wound healing and reducing the risk of infection.

Talk to your doctor about a pneumatic compression device if you believe you’re living with one of these conditions.

Are pneumatic compression devices better than compression stockings?

Both pneumatic compression devices and compression garments for lymphedema play important roles in a comprehensive lymphedema treatment plan. Pneumatic compression devices, such Nimbl, apply dynamic, controlled pressure to stimulate the lymphatic system and promote fluid movement. Compression garments, like stockings, are designed for all-day wear and are effective for ongoing maintenance and daily symptom control. Often, both pneumatic compression devices and compression garments are recommended as part of a complete decongestive therapy plan, using a PCD once daily while wearing compression garments throughout the day.

How long should you wear a pneumatic compression device?

Nimbl pneumatic compression devices are designed to be worn daily for up to 60 minutes. As you transition into the maintenance phase of therapy, consult with your health care team about adjusting ongoing treatment frequency. One of the benefits of Nimbl is its small, lightweight, and compact design, allowing patients to access compression therapy whether at home or on the go.
